焦桂英（傅全香 饰）是京城名妓，周济秀才王魁（陆锦花 饰）多时，之后又以身相许，两人之间的感情非常的要好。两年后，王魁进京赶考高中状元，受到了官家之女的青睐，被利益冲昏了头脑的王魁一纸休书抛弃了苦苦在家乡等他回家的焦桂英，得知此事的焦桂英伤心欲绝，将所有的怨恨倾诉于海神庙之后自缢身亡。海神爷得知了焦桂英的冤屈，接下了她的诉状，判官准许焦桂英的鬼魂进京同王魁当面对质，焦桂英念在两人夫妻一场，尚有余情未了，于是对他加以试探，哪知道王魁忘恩负义，绝情到底，一怒之下，焦桂英活捉了王魁，让他受到了应得的惩罚。

Based more on a stage adaptation by Mary Manning than the Joyce novel itself, the film concentrates on Dublin pubkeeper Finnegan (Martin J. Kelly), who while in the throes of inebriation has a vision of his own death. As the bemused Finnegan lies in his coffin, his friends gather for his wake. The "corpse" tries to cut through the keening and platitudes by probing the innermost thoughts of those closest to him. The surprising aspect of this film is that so much of its difficult text works on screen--a tribute to the loving care of scripter/director/ editor Mary Ellen Bute, who, while preparing this film spent her waking hours picking the brains and burrowing through the resource materials of the James Joyce Society.Although director Mary Ellen Bute’s highly regarded Finnegans Wake (aka Passages from Finnegans Wake) is a unique film that is likely to baffle anyone unfamiliar with James Joyce, it cannot be dismissed merely as a literary exercise. The director was right in claiming that her film was “not a translation of the book but a reaction to it”. It is actually based on a stage play by Mary Manning, who was also responsible for the screenplay.
