幕末的德川幕府，因列强的压迫下，力量衰减，从此一蹶不振。就在此时，由芹泽鸭、近藤勇、土方岁三、山南敬助、冲田总司等人组织了“新选组”共同保卫幕府的政权。浪人山崎烝（市川雷藏饰），因被新选组局长近藤勇（城健三朗饰）的个人魅力所折服。不顾伴侣的强烈反对下，踌躇滿志的向新选组毛遂自荐，要求加入。随之山崎以他超群的剑法，很快的得到近藤和土方等人的信赖，而前局长芹泽鸭在新选组内部革命时遭到了处决，正好被山崎见状，从此对新选组有所顾忌，“池田屋事件”中，山崎为了保护的同伴，不得不举刀来对抗在池田屋的讨幕人士，事件之后他放弃了以前的伴侣，随着新选组扬长而去。
